Neighborhood Spotlight
Welcome to the newest addition to the Jason Gaia Team website. Many people don't often venture off to many different areas of the city, so we will bring them to you. We will highlight special events, community news and provide tours of the many different neighborhoods that make up this great city.
The Pinch District
The area of North-Downtown Memphis is commonly known as the "Pinch District". The Pinch has played an important role in local immigration since the earl;y nineteenth century. The city's first business district, this neighborhood was originally known as Pinch-Gut, a term that referred to the area's starving Irish immigrants who were so thin that their stomachs were pinched by their belt. This area was home to a significant number of Jewish, Italian, Russian and Greek immigrants and in it existed a great sense of entrepreneurship among first-generation immigrants who sought upward mobility for their children.
Since the late 1980s urban renewal has changed the character of the neighborhood. Endeavors such as the construction of the Pyramid and the development of the downtown trolley lines revitalized the area. As a result, popular restaurants and bars now distinguish the Pinch District. Developers have recognized it as a promising area for the construction of new residences such as condominiums and townhouses.
